During the 9th to 6th centuries BC, Phoenicia kept a shaky tributary relationship with the neo-Assyrian-Babylonian empires. Cyrus the Great, Archaemenic Persia, in 539 BC conquered Phoenicia but after two centuries of Persian rule Alexander the Great conquered what’s now Lebanon and subsequently in 64 BC the Romans, followed by the Muslims in the 7th Century.
